The highly anticipated mega development at Cornubia
required the existing interchange to be upgraded in order to improve the
traffic flow to and from the N2 and M41.
The construction of the interchange is funded by SANRAL and the
KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport.
The bridge will connect Mount Edgecombe, Umhlanga and Phoenix with
Durban and the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal where currently approximately
40 000 vehicles enter and leave the M41 and N2 daily.
The four-level interchange facility will provide at least
two lanes on each of the major movements. The upgrade includes the
implementation of directional ramps which will eliminate the need for
controlled signalisation, thus ensuring the free flow of traffic in all directions.
The new interchange is expected to significantly reduce the high traffic
volumes experienced on the old interchange.
To provide for the safety of pedestrians, a pedestrian bridge will be
constructed over the N2 and connect to new footways. The project is anticipated to be completed in
October 2017.
The new interchange will ensure that Cornubia, Mount Edgecombe and Umhlanga will be the ideal location to set up businesses as the
upgrade will improve the flow of traffic to supporting roads and ease
congestion. Businesses based in these areas will have unencumbered access to
main arterial routes. The central
location Mount Edgecombe will greatly benefit any office or warehouse based in
the area.
